One-on-one time with a child is hard to come by but OH so important!

I vividly remember one of my aunts taking me ice skating when I was 7 years old.  Did it matter that there was a skating rink at my elementary school that I skated on every day?  Of course not! What mattered was the individual attention, the recognition that I was special and warranted a slice of her busy time, that made it a memory of a lifetime.

In that spirit, GR Kids is helping one of you carve out some special memories of your own.

We’re giving away a pair of tickets to the Farmyard Express, happening on Thursday – JULY 21 from 10am – 2pm.

This 3-in-1 family event takes you from JOHN BALL ZOO SOCIETY to the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum and on to DOUGLAS J AVEDA SALON for some crazy hair……all on an open air trolley!

Together, you’ll experience pigtails, rooster tails, and smiles!

The going rate for this adventure is $14 per person ($11 for members of JBZ or GRCM) 2 and under FREE…and may I suggest that you buy your tickets soon or enter to win our little contest (John Ball Zoo says tickets are selling quickly.)

Click here for more information on ordering tickets.

To enter to win this prize, tell us (in a comment) who you would take on the Farmyard Express -OR- your best childhood one-on-one memory.

My best memory of John Ball Zoo as a child was waking up the first Saturday of the month to our traditional “Zoo Day Let’s Play” breakfast! After we ate we put on our shirts with our zoo animals on them and headed out! Good Times!

  • Katie Schwarze says:

I’d take my 7yo son……suffering hard from the “middle child” blues this summer. His older brother has autism so he needs more attention and his little brother is 4 (no comment hahaha). My poor middle guy needs some one on one mom time BAD. ;)

  • heather denning says:

I would take my 3 year old daughter. She is such a good little lady and I think we need a day like this! We do things as a family but haven’t really had a fun day out with out daddy or her baby sister. She would love it!

  • Dawn LaVigne says:

If I won these tickets, I’d take my girlfriends little six year old boy, Nicky, with me for a fun filled, memory filled day! He calls me ‘Miss Dawn’ and he lives in my neighborhood. He was a ‘surprise’ baby for my girlfriend and so his two siblings are much older than he is. I think it would be really fun to spend some quality one on one time with him this summer, and this sounds like the perfect opportunity. Once when I was picking him up from school for his mom, he took his then sweaty head of hair and ‘smooched-up’ the sides making his hair into a funny mohawk. He said “Look Miss Dawn, my hair is ‘stylish’!” So I know he loves ‘crazy hair’ activities :)
Thanks for the opportunity to win these tickets.

  • Sarah Grove says:

I would take my daughter Halie with me. She is 3years old and LOVES animals, the zoo is her favorite place! She also loves to play beauty shop and likes to do my hair silly, going to Douglas J Aveda Salon would be so fun for her!!

  • Matt Ranzenberger says:

I would take my friend’s 5 year old daughter. My friend just had another little one, and her oldest deserves all the one on one time she can get!

  • Kerri says:

I would take my four-year old daughter. She has a twin brother and they get very little time apart. She is always asking for some girl time away. She would love this and it would give us our girl time. Then her brother can get some needed daddy time too.

  • Angie says:

My best childhood one-on-one memory is with my then soon-to-be new aunt, she took me to see a movie. The movie was An American Tale, and we got to go out to dinner at Mr. Fables beforehand. I felt so special, that she took me, and she worked at Fables at the time, so she introduced me to everyone. Like I said, it made me feel SOOOO special!

  • Justine says:

I’d take my 3-year-old daughter for some mommy/daughter time! :)

  • Amy Fleck says:

I would take my 3.5 year old daughter. I have a home day care and she does an awesome job sharing me all day with the other kids. It would be great to be able to do this for her!

  • Sarah says:

I would take my daughter along. She’d thoroughly enjoy it!

  • danielle barone says:

I would take my two boys and my husband!!!!

I would love to take my daughter she loves the zoo and the children’s museum.

  • Heather says:

I would deffinetly take my 7yr old daughter. She always talks about having “mother daughter time”, but with a 2 and 1 year old also, its very hard to find time for just her. She would LOVE it! And very well deserves it.

  • Maryann says:

My granddaughter will be visiting me from PA that week. It would be so much fun and very special to spend a day with just her!

  • Jennifer says:

If I win, I would take my son Jackson on this – he would LOVE it! I remember my Aunt and Uncle taking me skiing up north when I was like 12 – I still remember some details of the trip vividly. :)

  • Monica says:

Wow! This sounds awesome! I would love to go with my daughter. We could definitly use some mommy/daughter time.

  • Emily Harkness says:

I lived next to the most wonderful man growing up. He was a farmer who always wore boots so as a child I naturally called him “Boots!” My favorite memory is when Boots took me square dancing. We went to a big VFW hall where most people were dressed up and we danced and danced and danced. I have always been grateful to Boots for taking time out of his busy day to spend with me. He did it regularly in a variety of ways but the square dancing was my favorite:)

  • Tom says:

I would give these to my wife and daughter. They would love some one-on-one time!

  • Jessica says:

I’d take my little dear, sylvie with me. She loves animals and time with mom! One of my fav childhood memories is learning to ski with my dad. He had the “dive in” mentality laced with lots of positive encouragement

  • Christine Stander says:

I would love to win this pass. I have 6 children and it is very hard to give one on one attention. I would bring my youngest son even though he is the baby he really never has alone time with me.

  • I would take my Grandson, Kaden! You’re right – one on one time is so important, whether it be parents, grandparents or some other significant grown-up in a child’s life. :)

  • Megan says:

I would take my 3 1/2 yr old. He and I haven’t gotten to spend much alone time together since the birth of his baby brother 7 months ago! He would love this!

  • Sarah says:

If I won, I’d take my son. He had 4 years of just me and him, but since becoming a big brother, has had little time with just me. He has always loved the zoo and the children’s museum.

  • Gina says:

Yikes! How to choose? I’d probably take my daughter as I’m pretty sure they couldn’t do much with my little guy’s super-short hair!

  • Jodi says:

I would take my 2.5 year son. I do home daycare and for his age he is such a big boy for me during daycare days sharing his toys with all our daycare friends way more than I ever expected for his age. But on these busy days I also miss my one on one time with my lil man. He def my world!!! :)

  • Carla Watt says:

This sounds fun! If I won I would go with my daughter & husband. We could use some family time as we have been through a lot of stress these past few months with moving to this side of the state, selling a house, temporarily moving into a condo, then into another house, etc. Life is finally settling down and a day off together would be great!

  • Laura Lewis says:

I have 7 kids, so one on one time is at a bare minimum for sure! I would take either my 7 year old son, Sam. He has 5 sisters and his brother is 10 years older, so he is left alone without playmates often. He has never been on a date with mom alone. Or, I would take my 10 year old daughter (10 tomorrow) Emma. We have only had a mother/daughter date one time alone. She is smack in the middle of the pack and often just blends in. Or, I’d pay for my own ticket and take the two of them…they are wonderful kids and deserve to have some fun!

  • Danielle says:

I would take the whole family and my niece and nephew if I won =) thanks so much, hope to win and have fun with the family.

  • Kim VanDam says:

One of my best memories is always going to the zoo with my parents and siblings! We would always have to have our picture with the John Ball statute and then we always went to Dairy Queen on the way home!

  • Cate Zomberg says:

What a great opportunity to spend some time with my son. We love doing things like this however with money tight this would allow me to spend more time with him other than at home.

  • Desiree McClain says:

I would love to take my 7 yr old son! I am almost 8 months pregnant with my third son, so I’m not able to spend quite as much one on one time with him as I’d like. We just moved to MI in February from CA. Went to the zoo one of the first “nice” days in spring and got rained out. Would love to take him back there and enjoy a mommy and me day with him… before I POP! Lol… thank you.

  • Marsha says:

I would bring my five year old son. The zoo, children’s museum, and an open air trolley…might just be the right combination for one of his favorite childhood memories!

  • JulieR says:

I would take my son who is the biggest animal lover…just like his Mom.

  • Kat Disselkoen says:

I would love the opportunity to take my 4 year old son- being the baby of the family by no fewer than 9 years, he doesn’t get the one on one preschool experiences that my older two did.

  • evm says:

I would so take my oldest son Parker who is 3! It’s been a LONG time since we have had any 1:1 time. My husband and I work opposite shifts to avoid daycare, which is great, but leaves limited time to do 1:1 things! Also he has been BEGGING me to take him to the zoo!

  • Manda VanIwaarden says:

My oldest daughter (5) could use some mommy time away from her little sister for a day! Nothing makes her feel more special!

  • Erin Cnossen says:

I would take my 6 year old son. We are about ready to have our second baby, and we always could use some extra mommy and son time together before the new one comes along…

  • sarah says:

i would take my autistic son who is 8. he loves anything hands on!

  • stephanie says:

I would take my 3 year old little guy who loves farm animals. He has a rough start to summer and would love the special one on one time! Three visits to the doctors in three weeks but we are finally healthy and ready to see some animals!

  • Lisa ingersoll says:

I would absolutely love to share this day with my daughter!! She deserves a special day with mom since life has been crazy with a new baby sister around. Thank you for the opportunity to win tickets for this event! Fingers crossed!!!

  • melissa says:

I would take my son Mikey. He suffers from autism but LOVES animals. His eyes just light up whenever he sees them or hears their sounds. We would have SO much fun together. The children museum thrown in as well, sounds like one of the best summer memories that this little guy could think up :)
    VERY cool contest!

  • Heather Sheahan says:

I would bring my 2 1/2 year old daughter! She would love getting her hair done with mama! I can’t lie, I would love it too :) Oooh and riding on the trolley would be a great time I would cherish with her!

  • Lori says:

I would take my son and daughter.
