There’s something new afoot over at the grkids facebook page! We are running a virtual baby shower!
Why make a big deal about running a contest on facebook? They are a dime a dozen over there, that’s for sure. But what you probably didn’t know is that MOST of the CONTESTS running on facebook are either illegal or in violation of facebook’s terms of service.
There was a time in recent history that we at grkids didn’t even know there were rules governing contests. If I want to give something away I should be able to give something away, right? Wrong! At least where the government is concerned.
It turns out that there are a lot of rules governing how you give something away. That’s why there is all of that fine print at the end of our contests now. (I listened to an attorney talk on this subject for a whole evening. It can make your head swim!) Add to that facebook’s own policies (they don’t want to be held liable for some user’s illegal actions) and you’ve got a whole lot of hurdles to overcome if you want to run a contest on facebook.
Did you know that the following things are illegal in Facebook land?
- asking you to like a page to enter a contest (we just did that last week- oops!) we’re repenting and turning over a new leaf!
- telling you to post something a comment or photo on a facebook wall or status to enter a contest (even the beloved ‘extra entry’ is not a loophole for this one)
- businesses announcing and/or contacting winners via facebook
So- how can we be running a contest on facebook with all of these rules? We are using a 3rd party application and our contest is being run on a tab of our page, not on our wall. You provide your info to us on that tab, read all the legalease, and we’re all good to go. You’ll get notified via email if you are a winner. Of course, we hope that YOU will post on our wall- that is something facebook still allows
