Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

February 2, 2012

This series on neighborhood activities offers fun events and ideas to create community in your neighborhood.

We last wrote about neighbor hood fun with the Neighborhood Halloween Party in October.  Since then, I (Katie) have been in the process of building and moving into a new home in a new neighborhood.  I’m thrilled to be in my house now (and not living with relative 45 minutes away!)  in a new community with new friends for my children and myself.

We moved into our  house over New Years weekend.  It’s the time of year when families hibernate and we were just see grkids.com for imageexpecting an occasional drive-by wave from a neighbor.  It’s definitely a difficult time to make new friends.

Imagine my surprise when one of our new neighbors brought over a hot apple pie!  Wow… that is something that touched my heart, giving me peace about uprooting our family for our old amazing neighborhood.  Our new neighbors are thoughtful and generous.  One plows our sidewalk each time it snows.  Another emailed me to let us know about a neighborhood email account.  Apparently we have neighborhood ice cream socials, parties and garage sales.

Those simple acts of kindness that are helping us feel home.  The lot next door to our home is empty.  I can’t wait to play Welcome Wagon when the time is right.

Have you had similar experiences in your neighborhood?  Have you ever been the Welcome Wagon?  Share your ideas on welcoming or creating a “neighborhood” with us!  Or tell us how you’ve been welcomed…we’d love to hear your ideas.
